Hydrogen from the tanks is fed to the fuel cell stack. There it is combined with air provided by the compressor. The energy in the hydrogen is converted to electric power at low temperatures.

This fuel cell can not provide peak power to the car by itself. Instead its power output is combined with power from the batteries.
